Incidental Fee 101

What is the Incidental Fee?

The Incidental Fee is a fee paid by every student through their tuition, and helps fund various student programs.  The incidental fee funds programs that promote students cultural and physical development, from student unions to intercollegiate athletics to childcare.  Fee funding for programs is determined through the democratic process within the ASUO.

Where the money goes: the three major programs

STUDENT PROGRAMS

The Programs Finance Committee (PFC) allocates the budgets for more than 120 student groups each year. These groups then use the provided funds to put on events, attend conferences and offer students the opportunity to get involved.

EMU PROGRAMS

The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) Board oversees, budgets and makes policy for the implementation of the EMU's fee-funded programs, like the Craft Center, Club Sports and the Outdoor Program.

INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

The Athletic Department Finance Committee (ADFC) negotiates the agreement with the Athletic Department to purchase student tickets to NCAA athletic events. They also work with the Recreation Center to bring students 'free' admission to our facilities on campus.

FAQ

Q: How long have students been paying the Incidental Fee?

A: The Incidental Fee has existed in its current form since 1970.

Q: What if I do not use my Incidental Fee?

A: Many students use the Incidental Fee without even realizing it. Every time you ride the bus using your UO ID, any time you attend a free event on campus, get a football or basketball ticket, or use the EMU facilities, you are using the fee.

Q:Who decides where my Incidental Fee goes?

A: Every year, the PFC, ADFC and EMU Board work with the ASUO Senate to formulate the fee budget for the following year.  Senators and many members of the finance committees are students elected by the student body every spring.
