ASUO Internship
| Purpose | The ASUO Internship program consists of a weekly, skill-based workshop taught by on-campus staff, student leaders, and figures from around the state paired with an intern assignment and hands-on tasks based on your interests and supported by regular mentorship from a member of the ASUO Executive Staff. Interns may focus their work on one area or multiple ones, in addition to teaming up with fellow interns to take on their own projects. Credits may be received if interns arrange to do so with the internship coordinator. | |

| Principle Functions: |
Communication/Public Relations Intern-The Communication/Public Relations Intern(s) will assist the Communication and Public Relations Director in publicizing ASUO campaigns, events, and projects, writing press releases about ASUO issues, and developing media strategies and plans within student government. Environmental Advocacy Intern-The Environmental Advocacy Intern(s) will immediately begin helping to plan the 350-Day of Action/Student Sustainability Faire as well as working to launch the Student Sustainability Coalition. The event will be October 21st and will involve all of the environmental groups on campus. It will also be the introduction to the new Student Sustainability Coalition, a loose organization uniting the environmental groups on campus towards a single voice on issues important to us. Specifically the intern(s) will be working to contact certain environmental groups, and bring them on board to the Coalition and Sust. Faire. The intern(s) will also be working on certain logistics for the event. Event Coordination Intern- The Event Coordination Intern(s) will assist the Events Coordinator in preparing mailings to be sent to potential event participants and vendors, producing t-shirts and publicity for the ASUO Street Faire and other events, and coordinating event volunteers. Federal Affairs Intern- The Federal Affairs Intern(s) will identify areas of personal interest and take on leadership roles within national student empowerment efforts in which the ASUO is included. These efforts range from running large-scale voter registration drives to implementing grassroots organizing and lobbying tactics on a federal level in order to strengthen students’ ability to influence federal funding and issues that affect them. Finance Intern- The Finance Intern(s) will assist in calculating the Current Service Level (CSL) of all ASUO Student Programs (student clubs, organizations, and centers), help prepare presentations for the Program Council Meetings (PCMs), and learn about maintaining a budget funded through the Student Incidental Fee. Fundraising Intern(s)- The Fundraising Intern(s) will work on arranging a winter term fundraiser, write memos and policies related to fundraising and ASUO finances, and participate in economic and budget analysis. Gender and Sexual Diversity Advocacy Intern- The Gender and Sexual Diversity Advocacy Intern(s) will assist in education and advocacy efforts within the LGBTQ community on campus and statewide levels, in addition to gaining an understanding of the ASUO and assisting in campus and statewide voter registration drives to build power for members of the LGBTQ community. Multicultural Affairs Intern- The Multicultural Affairs Intern(s) will assist the ASUO Multicultural Advocate in making Ethnic Studies 101 or 102 a U of O academic requirement and in working with U of O Residential Life to create or implement Multicultural Affairs in the residence halls/program curriculum. Non-Traditional and Veteran Student Advocacy Intern- The Non-Traditional and Veteran Student Advocacy Intern(s) will assist the Non-Traditional and Veteran Student Advocate in coordinating with program directors across campus to provide resources and support to those students seeking such outreach. Outreach Intern- The Outreach Intern(s) will coordinate activities that facilitate outreach, awareness, and understanding of the ASUO including working on the ASUO branding campaign and graphic design of ASUO literature and promotion materials, planning outreach events, and disseminating ASUO information to the student body. Programs Administration Intern- The Programs Administration Intern(s) will identify aspects of student programs they are interested in and create/carry out projects that relate to facilitating the Program Council Meetings and Program by-laws. State Affairs Intern-The State Affairs Intern(s) will work directly with the Director of State Legislative Affairs on the main project that director tackles each term. For fall 2009, State Affairs Interns will take on coordinator (lead) positions within the Oregon Special Election Voter Registration Drive at the U of O and gain valuable planning, grassroots organizing, volunteer recruitment, class presentation creation/scheduling, and election knowledge and skills necessary to prepare them to ascend the ranks to become the ASUO Voter Registration Drive Directors in spring and fall 2010. State Affairs Interns will also assist in other statewide student activism and empowerment on campus and at the capitol by working on statewide higher education funding projects to help provide their peers with more need-based aid, lower tuition, and more youth/student-friendly laws and legislation. University Affairs Intern(s)- The University Affairs Intern(s) will be able to determine what their internship looks like based on personal interests and strengths, ranging from assisting the ASUO Director of University Affairs in doing outreach and advertising for open positions on campus committees, to attending committee meetings, surveying students and evaluating data derived from special University Affairs projects, helping hold campus committee members accountable to their responsibilities as representatives of the student body, and reporting back to the Director of University Affairs. Potential interns interested in web design and making the online committee position application more efficient and accessible are highly encouraged to apply. |
